Mai Tradition and Technique
Geiko and Maiko dances are widely known for their elegance and advanced skills.
These women have mastered the traditional dance through long training.
As part of the traditional performing arts of Japan, these dances have been passed down from generation to generation, and their skill and beauty captivate and deeply impress audiences. -
About Maiko
A maiko is a “training period” for geiko, and there is an age limit of around 20 years old. Another difference between a maiko and a geiko is that a maiko wears a kimono with glossy colors and patterns.
Furthermore, a maiko wears a sash called a “darari no obi” and round geta called “okobo,” which are about 10 cm high. The hair is tied up with natural hair and a gorgeous hairpin, so if you were to walk through Kyoto's Hanamachi district, you would instantly recognize a “maiko” at a glance. -
About Geiko
There is no age limit for geiko. They wear a plain black or other color kimono with a normal-length obi wrapped around it and sandals.
While a maiko ties up her natural hair, a geiko uses a wig for her hairstyle and does not wear a gorgeous hairpin like a maiko.
